Athlone, part of Ireland’s Hidden Heartlands, is well worth a visit. Steeped in history and also fantastic for shopping, there is something for everyone.
Take a trip back to the 13th century and find out more about people and place, as you explore Athlone Castle. Why not take a Viking Boat Tour from the Castle? A great way to explore the River Shannon and remember to check in advance the times to ensure that the tour is running the day you visit.
Just across the road you will find the Luan Gallery. The gallery hosts various art exhibitions throughout the year and admission is free.
No trip to Athlone is complete without a visit to Sean’s Bar, this is the oldest bar in Ireland and is full of atmosphere. There’s live music most nights too, so grab a stool and enjoy.
If you are looking for food check out Murphy’s Law Gastropub, you are guaranteed to leave with a full stomach!
For the younger folk Glendeer Pet Farm is the place to go. You can see farm animals and even more exotic species such as meerkats, emus, monkeys and wallabies. There’s a playground and a coffee shop at the farm so you could spend a few hours here.
Another option is to consider a cruise on the River Shannon. Check out River Run. They are a family based business and are sure to have a boat trip to meet your needs.
Check out the opening times before you visit or plan your activities as some are just open at certain times of the year.
